Roughly 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then found multiple other marked automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; authorities are presently not aware of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism left him without words and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in 2020.
