Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he publicly stated that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Presence

One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He joined originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His True Position

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
