Intense gales reaching speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in nearly 90,000 households lacking electricity and forced officials to cancel in excess of 100 flights, according to regional news sources.

These gusts are affecting the whole South Island and lower areas of the northern region, per the country's meteorological service.

The nation's agencies have announced uncommon red wind warnings - the top caution category - in key areas including Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors, avoid travel, and make arrangements for more power and communication outages.

The electricity loss is primarily influencing residences predominantly in the South Island, while authorities state that power was being slowly brought back.

Regional news have reported that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, while trees and electricity poles have been knocked down by the gusts.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being impacted by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Aircraft services to and from the city have been cancelled because of the gusts, whereas various routes and public facilities are also closed.
